But “investment” sounds sooooo pretentious…

As I transitioned from a hobbyist photographer to a professional I would research pricing and quickly saw that most photographers called their pricing structure an investment and to me, that sounded pretentious.
In time and after a bit of thought about the topic it did feel true to me that it is in fact an investment.

The client is paying me for my time, knowledge, and to a lesser extent, the quality of equipment I use to deliver their images. They are also investing their time into the process, all in the hopes and belief that in the end we will have created a piece of art that they will reflect upon and cherish; ideally as wall art in their homes, or perhaps smaller prints in an office or other space to remind them of a special moment or time in their lives.
